What is Hasta Sāmudrika Śāstra?
Hasta Sāmudrika Śāstra is part of the ancient sacred Indian art of analyzing the body – both as a whole and in its various parts. In Hasta, the hand and its shape and markings is deemed to be a unique reflection of the movements of nature. The human hand reflects the trajectory awareness takes through our human form.
Considered a sister to Jyotiṣa (or Vedic Astrology), the beautiful old world science of Hasta Sāmudrika is both accessible and fascinating. Hands encode and reveal our character, talents, strengths, needs, expectations, and potentials. The human hand is a living symbol that brings to light important details about the unfolding of our lives. It serves as a valuable tool for self-discovery, and a powerful device for snap-shot assessments of others we come in contact with. The human hand is a beautiful mirror that can function as our personal navigation system towards greater self-awareness and integration.
The Level 1 course is a powerful in-depth introduction to this wonderful science.
The course serves as a foundation for further studies in Hasta Sāmudrika.
Learning objectives:
- Learn how to take handprints
- Learn about the divination systems of India
- Explore the foundations of karma
- Learn basic categorial principles of hand analysis
- Understand the difference between left and right hand use in hand analysis
- Explore basic fingerprint types
- Assess the 4 elemental hand types – earth, water, fire, air
- Learn fundamentals about the 5 fingers
- Explore basics of the major lines: life, head, heart, fate, simian
- Familiarize yourself with the sthānas or mounts
- Develop and learn to apply a systematic procedure for hand analysis

These traditions were originally intended to be transmitted chest to chest, with all the precious cues and energetic components and vulnerabilities of being physically and completely present with one’s teacher and students in the search for truth. That could not be more true of a course of inquiry that involves exploring a part of the human body like the human hand.
But all great traditions adapt to shifting times, and times indeed have shifted over the past year. For this reason, this course is being offered for the first time in an online, zoom-based format.
You are invited to prioritize these few hours a week and make every effort you can to be physically present for the class sessions. There are various reasons for this, including the beneficial mutual reinforcement of the student body, the fact that class material is cumulative and if you fall behind it will be challenging to catch up, and the preciousness of the live interaction between student and teacher during the classes.
Studying an ancient classical science is much more than the rote memorization of facts, or the cumulative absorption of information – it is a journey of transformation. Attending the class live will ensure your best chance of igniting the magic spark of this body of wisdom in your awareness. You will also be expected to study/integrate the material between classes and to occasionally complete simple homework assignments.
The course is designed to support active personal interaction and engagement with all participants. You will be supported in learning the information, and invited to interact.
Learning how to interpret the magical language of the human hand takes time and patience. It also takes looking at many hands. You will learn simple hand-printing, and you will be invited to take your own hand prints and those of your loved ones for you to learn from and practice the class material.
